Among the many announcements at E3, an exciting standout is EA’s new game – A Way Out. Developed by Hazelight, this is a 3rd person perspective action adventure game with an interesting twist, it’s based around splitscreen Co-Op play. This indie co-op adventure is set for release early 2018. And no, EA aren’t making you buy the ‘2nd player DLC’.
A Way Out sees you control two protagonists, Leo and Vincent, on a mission to escape prison and generally flee from the man afterwards.. What makes A Way Out so interesting is the focus on cooperative play. If nothing else, A Way Out’s desire to bring back split screen is great in my book. Luckily it has a lot more to offer than that.
Split Screen – The Revenge
We’ll focus on the splitscreen gameplay first though. Both players must operate in tandem to get through A Way Out. This means a level of communication and coordination that isn’t seen often enough these days. It gives you a lot of independence too. Each scenario has multiple solutions, meaning both players will have to debate and compromise on their choices.
This freedom in problem solving also sees each player taking a different role to succeed. One of you might (hopefully) be sawing through the bars with a file taken from a convenient cake . This will be going on while the other creates a distraction to occupy the nearby guards. You can find a peaceful, creative solution to a problem – or just fight your way out of it.
Even more exciting is the fact that players don’t exactly work in sync. A cutscene may be playing for one of you, while the other player is free to run around. Sometimes, the focus may shift to just one character, seamlessly moving back to the other later. This is a really unique mechanic that grabbed my interest. In an age where splitscreen multiplayer isn’t common, a game based entirely around it is a great prospect.
A Way Out Offers A Unique Blend of Action
The game’s feel and aesthetic will have its roots in a previous title by the developers, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. A Way Out will have a story of real emotion and depth just like the touching story of Brothers. While we can be sure that this will offer a gripping and poignant story, the broader details of the what happens aren’t known. What we do know is A Way Out will begin in prison, before taking you out into the wilder world.
A Way Out’s environments seem brimming with possibilities. Even before you escape from prison there will be challenges to overcome and difficult situations to navigate. Like escaping.
Once outside, players can rob stores, visit hospitals… Or roam through forests and engage in stealth sequences. The developers have taken every effort to pile as many elements into the game as possible. This should give it a unique feel, aside from sounding really fun to play alongside a friend.
While more details will be surfacing as the game nears release, what we know so far is a very exciting and fresh prospect.
