Avg Game Length: For as many matches as you’d like to play
No one would have ever thought that rocket-powered cars flipping around a Colosseum of destruction would be in the top ten lists for game of the year in 2015 (well actually that does sound pretty cool). Rocket League, developed by Psyonix, has a simple premise. Vehicular football. The game itself is easy to learn, but extremely difficult to master. Check out JHZER’s video of some of the most insane acrobatics and stunts you can perform in Rocket League. The matches are very short and last around five minutes. Meaning you can quickly jump in and out of a match without being tied down for too long. Unlike other online games, this makes Rocket League delightfully addictive because of how quick-fire the matches are.
Rocket League Is Not Devoid of Variety
Rocket League has several game modes including 1v1s, 2v2s, 3v3s and 4v4s as ‘standard’ football. These can be played casually and in a competitive ranked ladder. Excluding 4v4s which are known as ‘Chaos’, with good reason. Players compete against each other in these game modes chasing a ball twice the size of the car. All the while, trying to coerce it into the opposing team’s goal. ‘Season’ mode is also included in the game for solo players who can play against bots.
Additionally, a training mode is also available. Here, you can learn the basics of how to hit the ball effectively. Training mode will also teach you how to gracefully fly through the air, hitting the ball at the perfect angle, slipping it into the top right corner of the goal.
A Hat Trick of Extra Features
Rocket League also includes a few extra game modes including Snow Day (Ice Hockey) and Hoops (Basketball). All of which are included as free DLCs. These game modes are seen as more casual fun modes than that of the competitive modes mentioned above. These two modes consist of rules that will have players adjusting their tactical approach. This often creates some pretty spectacular plays. Especially in Hoops, where you dunk the ball in your opponent’s basket. Hoops definitely brings out the Michael Jordan in all of us.
The most recently added game mode is ‘Rumble’. This is a kind of Battle Royale football. Rumble adds a brand new dimension to Rocket League with randomized power-ups, of which there are eleven. These could be a boot, kicking your opponents across the playing field. Or a tornado, messing with their sense of direction. Most of all, Rumble is one of the most exhilarating game modes to play with friends.
Rocket League Is Almost Perfect
Unfortunately as with all games, Rocket League does have a couple of small issues. The main one being the plague that affects a lot of modern gaming – microtransactions. None of these actually affect gameplay in anyway, which is their only saving grace. All of the micro transactions are either new cars (that don’t impact on gameplay at all), or the most recent addition for Rumble. Crates which contain new decals, wheels and cars. This is where you get crates for playing the game. You’re expected to pay for the keys to open the crates separately! Finally, on rare occasions you will find some of the servers can be a little temperamental. As a result you’ll get ping spikes making you miss the ball. This can be frustrating, but it is a fairly rare occurrence.
Even with these minor gripes Rocket League has been one of my favourite games since its release. I currently have over 400 hours played across the Playstation and PC versions. Though, I still definitely consider myself a filthy casual. I whiff more that 50% of the aerial shots that I go for. But occasionally you’ll hit that perfect shot and it is one of the best feelings that you will ever have in gaming. I advise anyone to get this game as it is just brilliantly made and fantastically fun. Let us know in the comments below how your experience of Rocket League has been if you have played it.
