Turtle Rock recently announced in a blunt blog post that it will be making its game, Evolve free to play. First it will be rolled out to PC players. Then when they’re satisfied that performance is optimal, they will roll it out for PS4 owners.
Perhaps performance shouldn’t really be an issue as the game was already released back in February last year. Of course, it was not without its faults, both technically and with lobbying issues. The company’s co-founders even admitted that the idea of splitting up content among the various collector’s editions and DLC packs led to “a s***storm”. So this is why the free to play iteration of Evolve will also be a remastered one. Which is basically a polite way of admitting that it is time to clean up the mess and make the shiny new version free… As a candid “sorry” from the game devs.
Will Evolve Free To Play Bring Anything New
This fixed up version of Evolve promises to do several things to improve player experience. These include a re-balancing of the hunter class, improving maps and UI, adding deeper customization options in addition to overhauling player progression systems. Players who already own the game will be upgraded to “Founder” level and all progression will be carried over. With all the pre-release expectation this game went through, especially with Crytek backing it, it’s safe to say Evolve had a tumultuous release. Therefore, it’s a bold move for a game developer to put so much effort into salvaging a year old title like this. Of course, Turtle Rock’s end game here will undoubtedly be making profits out of micro transactions further down the line.
