I guess this article is just going to be self indulgent torture. They say ignorance is bliss and when we see which PS4 games ended up getting cancelled, that certainly rings true. The entries in this luckily short list were bursting with potential. Sadly, it doesn’t matter how much potential a game may have or how much of a fan following it builds up, pre-release. Third party funding may run out or the developers may lose a legal battle with someone with a stick up their arse. This nearly happened to No Man’s Sky as, for some reason, the people in charge of Sky TV weren’t happy with the title…ugh. Anyways, for now, here a list of the most promising cancelled PS4 games you’ll never play.
1) Star Wars 1313
Star Wars 1313 was originally announced in 2012, setting Boba Fett as the protagonist in an open world, underground den, known as 1313 on Coruscant. It would have been a great chapter for Boba. We would have seen him grow and develop into the badass man of few words we see in the older trilogy of Star Wars films. Sadly, this was cancelled only a year later due to Disney’s buyout of Lucasfilm.
Thankfully, Amy Henning (the lead writer from the first three Uncharted titles) has moved over to EA and was originally working on 1313. With the huge roster of Star Wars games EA has planned, it’s enticing to think that life would be easier for Amy to pick up where she left off. 1313 may yet see another incarnation of Boba’s past.
2) Prey 2
Like 1313, Prey 2 built up a huge fanbase while releasing the hype videos. It was set to be a fair departure from the premise of the first game. Players were looking forward to taking control of a human, free-running bounty hunter who’d lost his memory. The game was set to be an alien concrete jungle in an open world successor to the last game. Many fans were worried about a complete departure from the franchise. We were later told Tommy, protagonist of the last game, would be somewhere in the city.
Prey 2 was set to be a step in all the right directions. Sadly and rather oddly, in October 2014, Bethesda canned it, claiming that ‘it was not up to their standards’… It looked bloody great to me but then hey, what do I know? Prey is now being completely worked over as we discovered from Arkane studios at E3. Here’s hoping the Dishonoured gang can do a good job with the Prey name.
3) Silent Hills
Yowza, this was set to be a big one. With Hideo Kojima (MGS mastermind) and Guillermo Del Toro at the helm, the Silent Hill franchise was about to get a serious makeover. With Norman Reedus as the lead character, the game was set to be a true success. The hype was only boosted all the more by the famous Silent Hills: Playable Trailer, which inspired many new horror games, including Layers of Fear.
You may or may not know that Kojima’s relationship with Konami got pretty messy in the lead-up to his leaving. This was likely a defining factor in several members of the dev team explaining to the press that the game was no longer in development. Despite this, Konami explained that this was not the end of Silent Hill. For more CG Reedus, check out Death Stranding! Seems Kojima gets along with Reedus a lot better than Konami!
Titan was going to be a new MMO game brought to us by Warcraft creators, Blizzard. Its cancellation date of 2014 suggests that it could well have ended up on PS4. We have already seen older MMOs make their way over (Neverwinter). Development of the title began way back in 2008. Eventually, Titan would be cancelled due to a lack of passion in the dev team. Or so Blizzard says…
5) Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Patriots
This was one of the big ones prior to the current generation of consoles coming out. Everybody watched the trailer and it’s safe to say, this was what we all thought next gen was going to be. It could’ve been if the game didn’t get cancelled. The weird thing was Ubisoft eventually cancelled it in 2014 on the grounds that they wanted to create a more next gen experience. Sure, the video below isn’t actual gameplay footage so the real gameplay that we never got to see… maybe it was pants.
Rainbow 6: Patriots was supposed to be an intense team based shooter. It followed Team Rainbow going against a populist militia group called the True Patriots. Now, we’ll never get to see it.
