E3 saw a lot of great games hyped for release in 2017/2018. Anthem, EA and Bioware’s new IP, might be one of the best.
Anthem is a sci-fi open-world. It focuses on teaming up with up to four other players to explore a vast and unforgiving landscape. Beyond the wall that houses the human civilisation, hostility and discovery await. Players assume the role of a Freelancer, given the task of exploring the wilderness and ensuring survival for humanity.
Anthem Will Deliver Awesome Exo Suit Gameplay
Kitted out with exo-suits known as Javelins, the player can fly, explore, and hunt down enemies at their leisure. Plus they’re customisable with new gear dropped from quests or crafted from components. So far, the gear appears to be the only RPG element of Anthem. But the trailer that dropped at E3 wasn’t shy in showing just how diverse that gear can be. It allows players to develop a character that adapts to their needs.
Bioware is famous for romantic options and deep gameplay. Although nothing’s yet been revealed about other characters you’ll encounter, given their history, it’s a safe bet you’ll be able to romance a few well rendered NPCs.
A Vast Living, Breathing World Awaits
Players gain XP from exploring and discovering new areas. Anchoring exploration as a mainstay of the game, the trailer highlights underwater, aerial, and jungle environs as key areas to explore. It might change by the time the Anthem is released next year but so far players appear to be able to seamlessly switch from one mode of exploration to the next.
The world was shown to be rife with creatures that do not want you around and terrifying monsters that clash with each other as easily as players. Opening up the possibility for distracting enemies that are too tough. Or just avoiding them altogether, while they’re busy with other prey.
Players That Fight Together Reap The Rewards
Multiplayer aspects allow teams of up to four players to group up and challenge Anthem’s missions together. Though the entire game can be completed solo. Yet, on-the-fly multiplayer is completely supported to the point of being encouraged. Allowing players to call on friends to fill in for their own shortcomings when faced with a mission. Perhaps a ranged attacker can be called in to provide cover fire for a front-line tank fighter.
Likely building on the prodigious success of other drop-in, drop-out multiplayer games, like Blizzard’s Overwatch, Anthem is centred around a “live service” according to the developers. With the gameplay demonstration having a distinct focus on cooperative play.
It’s all still in development, but so far Anthem looks promising. Anthem is developed by Bioware Edmonton. The same studio that created the Mass Effect trilogy. Anthem is even set in a world where you can use an amphibious jet powered wingsuit to travel wherever you like.
Anthem premiered on the Xbox One X. But has also been confirmed for PS4 and PC. It will run in 4K, and looks to be a spectacular world. The city, jungle, and underwater environments all provide a unique feel. Anthem is slated for release in Fall 2018.
