Back in 2007, a little known developer created a game called “American McGee’s Alice”. It went fairly under the radar. Those who had played it were welcomed by a totally new spin on the Alice In Wonderland story. This universe is dark and twisted and revolves entirely around mental illness. Not unlike Ninja Theory’s masterpiece, Hellblade. Alice’s experiences in Wonderland were masterfully tied to themes of the original story. Yet, players were greeted with darker colour palettes, violent hack ‘n slash and recognisable yet twisted characters.
Then in 2011, Alice: Madness Returns arrived. With it’s flagship arrival on consoles, people started to take notice of the franchise. Critically, the game received middling reviews. Yet, on an aggregate basis, those who played it were keen to sing its praises. The dark world within Alice’s mind remained twisted for her second outing. Yet the then next gen tech allowed American McGee to create a more lavish world, further justifying the whacky themes of Wonderland. Fast forward to now and the niche fan base for the Alice games will be delighted to learn American McGee is working on his pitch to EA (who have always published the games) for a third installment.
Alice Asylum Can Only Happen With YOUR Help
Alice Asylum has yet to be pitched to EA by McGee. Partly because, yes, he still has the ultimate pitch to work on to get the game backed. However, the Alice franchise of games – it could be said – is not entirely a typical kind of game. As far as a publisher and its investors are concerned… it’s not quite dependable enough for profit. After all, the franchise is not one that is on the tongues of every gamer. So American McGee needs your help to convince EA this is a good idea; that this is a project worth starting.
You can help to make this a reality. A little like signing a petition, McGee has set up an email mailing list in an attempt to prove to EA there is an audience for this. You can click here to contribute and it won’t take a minute! A certain member on the All Things Playstation team has a lot of love for this franchise. And rightly so as the Alice games so far have rooted themselves firmly in his mind due to great storytelling, original style combat and an unforgettable art style. Check out the trailer for Madness Returns below, if you missed it on the last generation. Never too late to go back!
