At EGX this year, a surprise presentation from Lorne Lanning at Oddworld Inhabitants went down. What a surprise it was. The renowned indie developer is known for staying tight lipped throughout their projects. In this presentation, we were made aware of Oddworld: Soulstorm. Lanning was not able to show us any gameplay, sadly. However, what he did explain is exciting stuff for fans.
Oddworld: Soulstorm will carry on from New ‘N Tasty left off. Which places it on the same part of Abe’s timeline as Abe’s Exodus which released back in 1998. Indeed, Abe will be back to lead a new Mudokon revolution against their Glukkon oppressors. For those who may not know, the Glukkons are Oddworld Inhabitant’s dark representation of corporate greed. They will stop at nothing in the name of profit. Their latest moneymaker is Soulstorm Brew and they have been collecting Mudokon slaves to produce it. In the original sequel, we were introduced to darker tones. Mudokon slaves had their eyes sewn shut and reference numbers stamped on their chests.
This newer modern reworking of said darker tones continues the trend. New artwork revealed by Lanning showcases the sinister Glukkons and the dark industrious world they inhabit. This kind of world is the polar opposite to the Mudokons who dwell closer to nature. If the original sequel is anything to go by, we can expect to encounter hostile wildlife, dangerous and worshipped by the Mudokons. But it would appear Oddworld: Soulstorm will be no copy and paste job.
Lanning goes on to explain several gameplay mechanics that will change the rulebook on Abe’s classic adventures. It is hinted during the meeting that players will be able to carry over their save file from New ‘N Tasty when Lanning mentions “Abe will be going into his new adventure with all the Mudokons he previously saved”. Then we are told the Mudokons we save this time around will stack on top of the existing “escapees”. A new UI is shown off as we see rows of Mudokon icons at the bottom of a blank screen. Some flash red as they come under attack. Lanning even explains how the good deed of saving these Mudokons can become a burden as they “become harder to manage”. For now, check out the teaser trailer below. You’ll see what we mean by “darker tones”.
